Fire Safety At Home

Fire Safety At Home

Use our Online Home Fire Safety Check tool to find out how fire safe your home is. This quick questionnaire gives personalised tips for reducing the risk of fire in your home, including where to fit additional detectors.

The Home Fire Safety Check tool was developed in partnership with the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) and Fire Kills. The tool is now used by most English Fire and Rescue Services as a first level of support for fire safety in the community.

General tips for home fire safety

  • Fit a working smoke alarm on every level of your home to enhance early fire detection, giving you more time to escape safely. At a minimum, place smoke alarms in hallways and landings, ensuring they are centrally positioned and at least 30 cm away from walls and light fixtures.
  • Test your smoke alarms regularly to ensure they are operational. Safelincs smoke alarm reminder service can help you by reminding you via email or SMS to check your smoke alarms, at your chosen frequency.
  • Keeping doors closed at night slows the spread of fire as it creates a barrier allowing you more time to escape. This also reduces smoke inhalation by limiting the flow of smoke.
  • Keeping exits clear allows for a quicker evacuation. Hallways, stairs and exits should be clear of clutter to avoid slowing down the evacuation process as time is crucial.
  • Create a fire escape plan and practise fire drills with all household members ensuring everyone knows what to do and is aware of the designated evacuation point.
