High voltage equipment and more complex risks (eg backup power generators with fuel storage and high voltage) require more powerful extinguishers with fire fighting media that cannot conduct electricity at all. This is an area where powder extinguishers are a good solution.
Powder extinguishers cover a wide range of fire risks including gas, flammable liquids as well as electrical fires. The only drawback is the damage the fine powder causes to equipment and the reduction in visibility when deploying the powder. Powder extinguishers are therefore not used inside offices, however, engine rooms or industrial applications are suitable applications for powder extinguishers.
