Saffold Fire Escape Ladders are discreet, strong and easy-to-use fold-out ladders that are permanently fitted to the outside of a building. To open, simply pull out the anti-tamper release pin located at the top of the ladder and allow it to unfold. This will enable you to climb down to safety from a window in an emergency. Manufactured from anodised aluminium, this emergency escape ladder is strong and durable, enabling three people per floor to descend at the same time to ensure a quick evacuation. The top locking pin prevents unauthorised use of this ladder and when not in use, the Saffold Fire Escape Ladder folds neatly and discreetly away to resemble a drain pipe. Should you need to escape from a basement, the Saffold can be used as an access ladder with the release pin fitted at the bottom rather than the top.
In an emergency the slimline, unobtrusive drainpipe like profile of the Saffold Fire Escape Ladder is transformed into an emergency escape ladder by simply removing the anti-tamper locking pin. These locking pins are designed for quick release in emergency situations but are also designed to prevent unauthorised access from ground level.
To deploy your Saffold fire escape ladder simply remove the anti-tamper pin or unlock the ladder using the optional key lock. The ladder will open up away from the wall, allowing the rungs to latch into place, forming a sturdy, fixed escape ladder.
To aid access from above, from a roof for example, the optional pull-out extension handle will give users confidence and extra support to assist with their safety before and during descent of the ladder.
Additional release stations can be incorporated into your ladder configuration to enable the ladder to be accessed from multiple floors, making it suitable for multi-storey buildings. Please contact our customer service team on 0800 612 6537 or email support@safelincs.co.uk to discuss your needs further if you require a fire escape ladder with release stations.
The Saffold fixed fire escape ladder is designed to be installed by a competent person with a general understanding of DIY and the ability to use basic DIY tools. The easy to follow installation video will show you step-by-step what to do. By watching this, you will gain a good understanding of the process. You are supplied with all fixings and also two masonry drill bits
It is important to note that when open, the bottom rung of the ladder should be approximately 55cm from the ground, this will ensure that the last rung is not too high to step off. The side ‘arm’ of the ladder must not touch the ground when fully open. This is to ensure that the opening of the ladder does not get obstructed by small stones or similar debris.

Yes, the anti-tamper pin supplied with the Saffold ladder can be used at either the top or the bottom of the ladder.
Yes, the Saffold ladder has been successfully installed onto listed buildings, both public and private. The discreet design makes this permanently fitted fire escape ladder ideal for listed buildings. Once installed it does not affect the beauty of the building and is in keeping with other functional elements, such as drain pipes.
To be able to carry small children and pets down an escape ladder you would require a child harness or pet harness. These harnesses are suitable for use with all the escape ladders. The escape ladder that is most suitable for use with children, old enough to climb themselves, is the externally fixed Saffold ladder. If you would like a portable fire escape ladder suitable for children the X-It ladder offers the most stability.
To calculate the length of your Saffold ladder please refer to the measurement instructions and then enter your required measurements into our calculator.
Yes, as long as the ladder is installed next to a window that opens (one that does not have to be smashed to escape through it), the Saffold ladder can be used to practise a full evacuation. After the practice the Saffold ladder can be closed and re-secured in place with the anti-tamper pin. It is advised that when practicing, you start by climbing the ladder from the ground up first, and then progress to exiting from the window down the ladder.
The ladders are made out of standard segments (1.5m, 1.8m and 2.7m) which can be combined to achieve the lengths required. The maximum length is 10m. Please keep in mind that the ladders are usually installed 40cm above ground level to allow the ladder to fully open up (this also ensures that the last rung is approximately 55cm from the ground). If the ladder is a little too long for the application it can be shortened from the bottom by sawing off a length.
The Saffold ladder can be installed by a competent DIY person. There is an instruction video that covers all aspects of the installation and the relevant drill bits are also included in your installation pack. We offer installations in some areas, but this is not currently available nationwide. For installation information please contact our customer service team on 0800 612 6537 or e-mail us at support@safelincs.co.uk
