The Astra concealed door closer is unsuitable for doors fitted with projecting or rising butt hinges. Projecting hinges are commonly used where the door needs to clear a projection e.g. brickwork or architraves and opens up to 180°. The pivot point of a projecting hinge is further away from the door face than a standard butt type hinge. Rising butt hinges are designed to lift a door over a floor that is not level or has thick carpet.

When fitted to a fire door, the hinges used need to be fire tested to either Euro standard 1634 or to BS 476-22, and should have gone through an EN 1935 performance cycle test. Projecting and rising butt hinges are not tested under these standards.

Astra concealed door closers are suitable for use on doors fitted with standard ball race butt hinges. Ball race butt hinges consist of a round central point, where a pin joins the two flat plates. Again, when fitted to a fire door, it is important to ensure that the ball race butt hinges have been tested to the necessary fire standards.
