BS EN 1154 uses a 6 digit coding system to classify controlled door closing devices (door closers) and to specify certain requirements. Each digit identifies a particular feature of the product measured against the performance requirements outlined in BS EN 1154.
Digit 1 refers to the category of use for all internal and external doors to be used by the public and others with little incentive to care, for example where there may be a chance of misuse.
Digit 2 features only one test duration to identify door closers manufactured to this standard.
Digit 3 defines 7 grades which take into account the ability of the door closer to effectively close doors with differing weights and sizes. A closer which features an EN1 power size for example, can be used with doors with a width no larger than 750mm and no heavier than 20kg. Where the power size of a door closer is adjustable, the minimum and maximum powers sizes should be identified. The table below shows the 7 grades:
EN Closing Force Category | Maximum Door Width | Maximum Door Weight |
---|---|---|
EN 1 | 750mm | 20kg |
EN 2 | 850mm | 40kg |
EN 3 | 950mm | 60kg |
EN 4 | 1100mm | 80kg |
EN 5 | 1250mm | 100kg |
EN 6 | 1400mm | 120kg |
EN 7 | 1600mm | 160kg |
Digit 4 defines 2 grades which take into account the suitability of the door closer to be used on fire / smoke door assemblies.
Digit 5 refers to the safety of the door closer. Only 1 grade is defined as all door closers should meet this requirement.
Digit 6 defines 5 grades that specify door closers according to their ability to resist corrosion, identified in accordance with EN 1670.
The following example denotes a closer which is capable of opening to 180°, with a range of power sizes from size 3 to size 6, suitable for fire door use, and with a high corrosion resistance:
4 | 8 | 3⁄6 | 1 | 1 | 3
