<p>The Davy descender will be a key component in your emergency evacuation plan. Therefore, if is essential that routine maintenance checks are undertaken at intervals of no more than one month for units being used in extreme working environments and three months for units being used in normal working conditions.</p>
<p>All inspections should be carried out by a responsible person and the results recorded on the inspection card found inside the outer cover of the unit.</p>
<h2>Monthly / Three Monthly checks should include:</h2>
<ul style="padding: 0px 0px 0px 20px;">
<li>Both labels (front and side) are intact and readable</li>
<li>There are no loose fasteners or damaged / corroded parts</li>
<li>The cover and the base plate are free of distortion, cracks or other damage</li>
<li>The cable pulls through the breaking unit smoothly and evenly in both directions</li>
<li>The cable and both slings are free from cuts, abrasions and grime</li>
<li>The Karabiner and reel are both free from damage</li>
</ul>
<h2>Six Monthly checks should include</h2>
<p>The above steps should be repeated with the addition of:</p>
<ul style="padding: 0px 0px 0px 20px;">
<li>Remove the metal cover to check for free movement of gears, signs of wear or corrosion and blow out with an air hose.</li>
<li><strong>Do not oil the mechanism! </strong></li>
<li>Check brake drum and shoes for wear and if all are in good condition, replace the metal cover and return the unit to its locations</li>
</ul>
<p>Should any of the above points raise cause for concern the unit should be removed from service immediately and the manufacturer should be contacted.</p>
<h2>Cable and Sling replacement</h2>
<p>After 7 years from commissioning without being used, or 5 years from first use, whichever is sooner the cable and both slings should be replaced</p>
