Powder extinguishers cover a wide range of risks. Gas fires, electrical fires, liquid fires and general household fires. The powder fuses on the hot surface and creates an insulating crust which stops the oxygen supply of the fire. However, the powder does not penetrate very well into fabrics and soft furnishing and offers hardly any cooling effect, which limits its use in typical household fires. The discharge of the powder extinguisher also spreads the powder into a wide area, causing substantial damage to areas not affected by the fire, especially on soft furnishing and carpets, as the powder is usually caustic and eats away at fabrics and paints over a long period. Care must also be taken when deploying powder extinguishers in small rooms like small kitchens etc, as there is a risk of inhalation. We would recommend it in situation where you need to cover a broad risk and where cleaning is feasible, such as warehouses, factories, trucks, boiler rooms etc.
