Safelincs have taken the decision to discontinue sales of water additive fire extinguishers due to the harmful effects of substances the medoim contains. The use of some water additive and AFFF foam extinguishers is subject to regulations and all water additive and AFFF foam extinguishers will be prohibited by law in the next few years. We recommend water mist fire extinguishers as a suitable alternative to water additive extinguishers.

Water fire extinguishers are suitable for use on fires involving solid combustibles, such as such as wood, paper, fabrics and other class A fire risks. The water cools the fire and extinguishes it, penetrating into burning fabrics and deep into the core of the fire.
Water fire extinguishers are non-toxic and do not contain any harmful chemicals. This makes them safe for use in kitchens, in areas where there are children or pets present, and near vulnerable adults. The firefighting capacity of water is limited, so large water fire extinguishers are required to fight even small fires.
If your water extinguisher is to be used on or near electrical equipment, ensure that the ‘safe for use on electrical equipment’ symbol is printed on the front of the extinguisher. This demonstrates that it has been tested on live electrical equipment up to 1000v in accordance with BS EN 3-7, and is therefore safe for this use. Water mist fire extinguishers are ideal for this purpose, as they contain de-ionised water which will not conduct electricity, allowing them to pass the required di-electrical testing.
Water fire extinguisher markings are the same colour (red) as the extinguisher body. To help identification, the ID field on the water extinguisher is marked with a thick border and the words 'water extinguisher' or similar. To avoid any confusion, we recommend that you install fire extinguisher signs above water extinguishers to emphasise the nature of the extinguisher and its important restrictions (e.g. on electricity).

Water fire extinguishers should not be used on anything that isn’t a class A fire. This means that a water fire extinguisher should only be used on fires involving solid combustibles, e.g. paper and wood. Never use using a water extinguisher on Class B, C, D and class F fires – it will not be effective and could make the fire worse.
It is not safe to use water extinguishers on live electrical equipment unless they have been di-electrically tested and therefore shown to be suitable to use on electrical equipment up to 1000 volts.
