In some cases, fire exit signs are not required in smaller, simple premises when the location of the fire exit is obvious. However, for more complex buildings, you must have fire exit signs to comply with regulations and keep employees safe. It is a legal requirement to inform building occupants of the shortest route to safety in the event of a fire if it not immediately obvious. Fire exit signs are an essential part of a building’s fire safety and evacuation plan.

Fire exit signs are designed to direct people to the shortest escape route so they can exit the building as quickly as possible in an emergency such as a fire. Depending on the complexity of your building and escape routes, a series of signs may be required. The occupants in the building should be able to easily navigate to the nearest exit by following the arrows on the signs. In accordance with UK Building Regulations, fire exit signs should be on every doorway, window or other route that could be used as a fire exit in an emergency. In simple premises for example a small shop where the fire exit is immediately obvious, directional signs may not be required. The only sign that doesn’t need an arrow is the fire exit sign above the fire exit door, which must state ‘Exit’ or ‘Fire Exit’.
